Regional Rarities / Streeksrariteite

  • African Openbill. Oopbekooievaar: another record of this species, this time from Delta Park, Johannesburg, with one bird overflying, more evidence of this amazing irruption, 19 Jul 10 (GLd).

Lelkraanvoël: a remarkable sighting of an immature bird within a large flock of Blue Cranes was made in the grasslands near Devon within the Gauteng boundary, 01 May 10 (CK,DD); and again here 06 May 10 (EM); with the bird still present in the same area, 12 Jun 10 (ER,ST). This is probably the result of an immature bird wandering from the Mpumalanga escarpment grasslands further east, where the species has become quite uncommon.
