As part of national bird week, BirdLife Northern Gauteng is pleased to be hosting an Open Day to promote various birding activities and the benefits of joining a club of like-minded individuals and families. Bird-watching is one of the fastest growing pass-times of the modern South African household as more families escape from the rat race into the “bush”. Birding can be enjoyed outdoors at any time of the day by both young and old, so why not join us to find out more about the feathered friends that share our gardens, office parks and game reserves.
Activities arranged for the day
- Bird walks with experienced leaders
- Enjoy the various habitats the garden has to offer
- Find out all about bird songs and sounds
- Experience the benefits of birding in a group
- Birding ringing
- See the team safely capture birds
- Find out the international importance of ringing birds
- Become part of the information gathering
- See all the measurements for yourself
- Understand why the qualifications are so high for this important activity
- Get a chance to see and touch birds as we release them back into the garden
- Bird atlasing
- Why count birds?
- Understand why the information gathered is so important
- Enjoy walks with experienced atlasers
- For experienced birders understand how this brings new life into your birding
- Enjoy a display of birds from the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History (formerly the Transvaal Museum)
- General queries on birds will be answered
- Various books and birding items will be on sale
- Buy a ticket for our raffle to win a year’s subscription to BirdLife and other wonderful birding related prizes
