The Endangered Wildlife Trust in collaboration with the Vulture Programme of the Rhino & Lion Wildlife Conservation NPO and BirdLife South Africa will be hosting a fun?filled family day at the Vulture Programme’s rehabilitation centre near Hartbeespoort Dam. The purpose of this day is to create awareness of the continued plight of all vulture species and to highlight the work done by conservationists to monitor populations and implement effective measures to conserve these birds and their habitats.

“It’s more than an obsession, it’s an addiction,” said Ben King, one of the foremost birders in the world, who runs KingBird Tours in New York.

King was chatting to a group who were attending the first Global Birdwatchers’ Conference, held in November in Jamnagar in the state of Gujarat, India.

Visiting the nearby Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, and observing the expensive equipment people were lugging around — the telescopes, the Rolls-Royces of binoculars and long-range cameras — I could only agree with him.

During the BLNG Open Day on Saturday the 8th of May, we celebrated the life of Pauline Leinberger, our club President with tea at 10am. The celebration commemorated Pauline's famous tea basket.

Greg and Tamar of Ditsong National Museum of Natural History joined us for the open day and shared information about birds in general and the Lessor Flamingo, our bird of the year, with our club members and the general public.

Memorial Service
Pauline's family have asked that we pass on details of a memorial service for Pauline that will be held on Friday 7 May at 12 noon. The service will be at the National Botanical Gardens in the Milkplum Function Centre, Coucal Room, opposite the restaurant.

The entrance to the Botanical Gardens is at 2 Cussonia Street, Brummeria
