Here it is, my first programme for BLNG. Compared to the programmes I used to coordinate in Zululand, the BLNG programme is a whole new juggling act. It’s really incredible that the club provides its members with so many outings and activities, and as a coordinator it’s a challenge, but certainly a challenge which I enjoy tackling. This winter weather has kept some of us indoors and identifying birds on call from the comforts of a cosy bed on Sunday morning whilst some braver souls have scraped the ice off the windscreen and ventured into the frost covered landscapes to spot the early worm catchers defrosting their breakfasts. The prospect of spring makes me look forward to warmer birding conditions, the returning migrants, the smell of blossoming trees and easier identification of birds in breeding plumage. There are certainly plenty of outings and activities in our programme to keep you as busy as the weavers in spring time, so please come and join us and share this beautiful time of year. Meet / Ontmoet: 07:00 Leader / Leier: André Marx Join us for a spring walk around the Random Harvest Farm, a briefing on attracting birds to your garden by Linda de Luca, followed by tea and scones courtesy of the Random Harvest tea garden and get inspired by the plants available in the indigenous nursery. Directions: Directions from the N14 (Krugersdorp – Pretoria Highway). Take the Randburg/Zwartkop M5 off-ramp. Turn left towards Johannesburg along the extension of Beyers Naude Drive. Take the second tar road to your left at Valdor Centre (Friendly Grocer)into College Road. Follow the directional signs. Meet in the parking lot. Kom gerus saam vir ‘n lente-uitstappie na die Random Harvest Plaas en luister na Linda de Luca se praatjie oor hoe om voëls na jou tuin te lok. Dit word gevolg deur tee en skons, verskaf deur Random Harvest teetuin. Daar is ook plante te koop in die inheemse kwekery. Aanwysings: Vanaf die N14 (Krugersdorp-Pretoria snelweg). Neem die Randburg / Zwartkop M5 afdraai. Draai links na Johannesburg (die pad word later Beyers Naudeweg). Draai by die tweede teerpad na links af by die Valdor Sentrum (Friendly Grocer) in College Rd in. Volg die aannwysingsbordjies en ontmoet mekaar in die parkeerterrein. Meet / Ontmoet: 07:00 (for the bird walk) Leader / Leier: Ernst Retief SABAP2 Pentad(s): 2540_2815 Meet / Ontmoet: 08:00 (for the open day) Leader / Leier: Debbie van Zyl Join us for another day in the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens where we share our passion for birds with the general public. Come and enjoy a walk through the garden with Ernst and check out the birding related merchandise we have on sale. Directions: From the N1-N4 interchange, travel east on the N4 towards Bronkhorstspruit / Witbank. Take the Watermeyer road off ramp and turn left. Turn immediately left again into Cussonia road. The entrance is on the right. Park in the parking area and meet at the gate. Kom geniet ’n heerlike dag saam met ons in die Pretoria Nasionale Botaniese Tuine waar ons ons passie vir voëlkyk met die algemene publiek gaan deel. Ernst Retief lei ‘n uitstappie deur die tuine en daar sal ook ‘n BLNG stalletjie wees met inligting asook voëlverwante ware wat te koop sal wees. Aanwysings: Vanaf die N1-N4 wisselaar ry oos op die N4 na Bronkhorstspruit. Neem die Watermeyerstraat afrit en draai links. Draai onmiddelik weer links in Cussoniastraat. Die ingang tot die Botaniese Tuine is op die regterkant. Parkeer in die parkeerarea en ontmoet by die hek. Sat 19 : Course – The Glendower Gardening for Birds
Meet / Ontmoet: 09:00 Leader / Leier: BLSA – Sadie Halbhuber Venue: Pretoria National Botanical Gardens Join BLSA and Glendower for a morning’s course which will cover the history of gardening for birds, the do’s and don’ts of attracting birds to your garden, different habitats in your garden and which plants to plant. Cost R100 p/p includes tea and coffee. Please book with the club secretary. Directions: From the N1-N4 interchange, travel east on the N4 towards Bronkhorstspruit / Witbank. Take the Watermeyer road off ramp and turn left. Turn immediately left again into Cussonia road. The entrance is on the right. Park in the parking area and meet at the gate. Kom geniet saam ‘n oggendkursus oor die geskiedenis van tuinmaak vir voëls, aangebied deur BLSA en Glendower. Die praatjie sluit in die ‘moets en moenies’ van hoe om voëls na jou tuin te lok, hoe om verskillende habitatte vir voëls te skep, en watter plante om waar en wanneer te plant. Die kostes beloop R100 p/p en sluit koffie en tee in. Bespreek asseblief by die klubsekretaresse. Aanwysings: Vanaf die N1-N4 wisselaar ry oos op die N4 na Bronkhorstspruit. Meet / Ontmoet: 07:00 Leader / Leier: Frans van Vuuren SABAP2 Pentad(s): 2555_2825 This pan lies in the Bapsfontein area and is normally well populated with a variety of waterbirds. The surrounding grassland provides suitable habitat for a number of interesting species. Directions: Take the R50 towards Delmas. At Bapsfontein turn left onto the R25 towards Bronkhorstspruit. After a short distance turn right towards a tall tower. Meet at the gate below this tower. Daar is 'n pan op hierdie plaas waar normaalweg 'n wye verskeidenheid watervoëls voorkom, en die pan is omring deur hoëveld-grasveld met heelwat interessante spesies. Aanwysings: Ry op die R50 na Delmas. Draai links na Bronkhorstspruit op die R25 by die Bapsfontein-kruising. Kort daarna, draai links na ‘n hoë toring. Ontmoet mekaar by die ingangshek aan die onderkant van die toring. Thur 24 – Sun 27 : Camp at Lekgalameetse
SABAP2 Pentad(s): 2405-3005,2405-3010, 2410-3010, 2405-3015, 2410-3015 Come and join us for an extra long weekend in this scenic mountain reserve. The chalets are situated in a kloof on a small stream. Narina Trogon come to perch on the verandah and Lemon Doves forage in the gardens. The path along the stream heads up into the mountain which is great for birding. One can follow the tarred road through a forest of tall Yellowwoods up over the Orrie Baragwanath Pass onto the area called the Downs which consists mainly of rolling grassland. On your way to the camp you can check on the Taita Falcon at the Strydom Tunnel. Accommodation is in self catering chalets and the cost for 3 nights is R350 p/p. Please book with the club secretary. Kom geniet ‘n lang naweek in hierdie uitstekende bergreservaat. Die hutte is geleë langs ‘n stroompie in ‘n kloof. Bosloeries kan vanaf die stoep gesien word, asook Kaneelduifies. ‘n Voetpaadjie langs die stroompie lei mens op in die berge in waar uitstekende voëlkyk op jou wag. Mens kan die teerpad volg deur ‘n woud hoë geelhoutbome oor die Orrie Baragwanath bergpas, tot by ‘n gebied wat hoofsaaklik uit golwende grasveld bestaan, genoem die “Downs”. Op pad na die kamp kan mens by die Strydomtonnel stop om die Taitavalk waar te neem. Akkommodasie vir 3 nagte beloop R350 p/p. Bespreek asseblief by die klubsekretaresse. |
