From our organiser Dear Members

It’s been just over two years since I moved up to Pretoria from Richards Bay. As Chairman of BirdLife Zululand I was actively involved in the various activities of the club. Since moving to the city, the pace of life has increased somewhat. Instead of my usual albatross way of life, floating on the breeze and going where the wind takes me, I’ve found myself darting around like a stressed out prinia. This is the reason that I volunteered as a member of the Committee for 2009. ‘What kind of daft logic is that?’ I hear you say, ‘the poor girl has lost her bearings and migrated backwards’. Well as the programme coordinator I’ll be able to get involved in the activities again, get into the bush, dust off the bino’s and start seeing some birds.

As enthusiastic as I am about being the new programme coordinator, I need to be clear about the fact that we (the programme sub-committee and outing leaders) are not professional event coordinators, travel agents or bird guides, we are volunteers who love birding and want to share that passion with you. I am very grateful to Pauline and Anne who have once again volunteered to work on the sub-committee. I am sure we will work well together to bring you varied and exciting activities in the future. If you have any ideas for activities or outings that you’d like to do or venues to visit please contact and let me know. Thank you to Debbie for this last programme that she has put together before handing over to me.

I look forward to meeting you all in the future.

Regards

Amanda Haggett-Haagner
BLNG Programme Coordinator

The Tswaing or Soutpan Crater and Museum are fascinating geographical and ecological sites to visit. The 220 000 year old meteorite crater is the main attraction, but the variety of habitats are home to an amazing diversity of bird species, and this has resulted in Tswaing becoming one of the most popular birding venues near Pretoria. Because the reserve is visited often, a checklist of over 320 species of birds has been compiled.
To facilitate the entry permits, you must please book with the club secretary for this outing. She will need your car registration details and no of passengers. Entrance fees only payable on arrival. Directions will be supplied once you have booked.

Ingangsfooi sal daar betaalbaar wees. Aanwysings sal na bespreking gestuur word.

This reserve harbours a number of species that are not normally seen on club outings in the bushveld, as the area is predominantly highveld grassland with rocky outcrops. This outing will consist of driving along the circular route with frequent stops. Picnic and braai facilities are available. An entrance fee is payable.
Directions: Take the N3 south beyond Johannesburg towards Heidelberg. Take the R550 offramp and turn right towards Suikerbosrand NR (signposted). After approx 3 km turn left onto the dirt road marked Eendracht. Meet here. Total distance from Pretoria is about 100 km.

Toegangsfooie is betaalbaar.
Ontmoet hier. Totale afstand vanaf Pretoria is ongeveer 100 km.
